The grape originated in Croatia, headed south to Puglia, and then west across the Atlantic to California, where it’s known as Zinfandel. You’ll also find it in Australia, South Africa and Chile

Wine of the week: Primitivo

Discover this muscular and fruit forward grape

TASTES LIKE:

It’s not a grape for those who prefer lighter, lower alcohol reds - we’re talking big, bold, fruit-forward characteristics of bramble and spice, and more often than not an ABV of 14% or higher. That is unless you come across a White Zinfandel which is, confusingly, a pink wine that isn’t entirely our speed

HOW: Primitivo or ‘Zin’ is often left as a varietal number, though you’ll frequently find it blended with Negroamaro in Puglia in bold, punchy reds

DRINK IT WITH: It’s a good shout for spiced and spicy food, and will be spot on with any barbecue

AKA: Zinfandel, Zin, Crljenak Kaštelanski, Gioia Del Colle, Student Petrol
