Budget Christmas or Blowout Christmas?

Christmas wines for every budget

At Drop we understand that whatever is going on in the world, it is still important to drink a decent glass or two at Christmas. The team have put their heads together and come up with some tip top suggestions for Christmas day jollities whether you are planning a budget Christmas or a blow out celebration.

All wines are available on the Drop Delivery App or in any of our shops and bars

BUDGET CHOICE - RED

WHAT: Montepulciano, Sangiovese - Ciu Ciu - Bartolomei - Piceno, Marche, Italy - 2020 - £12.50

PRODUCER: Walter & Massimiliano Bartolomei, they're brothers. The vines were planted in 1970

WHERE: Marche, in a trapped land between the Apennines and the Adriatic. Ciu Ciu is apparently thus named because the men of the family used to work on the railroad

WHY: It's rich and juicy and full of fruit. It could quench the thirst of a thirsty (vegan) Wildebeest on hot day

BUDGET CHOICE - WHITE

WHAT: Garnacha Blanca - Clos de Dia - Blanco - Terra Alta, Spain - 2020 - £14

PRODUCER: Clos de Dia, a winery set in the dizzy heights of the Terra Alta (the clue is in the name)

WHERE: We're in Catalonia, south-west of Barcelona. There's not a great deal happening other than a lot of vineyards, livestock and sunshine

WHY: There's a delicious fleshiness to this wine, with its stone fruit characteristics and whisper of spice. A nice option of Viognier fans

BUDGET CHOICE - SPARKLING

WHAT: Glera - Zanotto - Frottola Frizzante - Veneto, Italy - 2020 - £14.50

PRODUCER: Riccardo Zanotto is the man behind this label. He makes predominantly “Col Fondo” sparkling wines (fermented in the bottle on lees). All the grapes are farmed organically and/or biodynamically, and with the help of trusted growers and oenologists

WHERE: The vines grow in clay soils at the foots of the Asolo hills. Prosecco Central. Or Centrale, as they probably don't say

WHY: A kiss of fruity sweetness make this a very inviting appetizer - lively and fun, and a good one for cocktails; splash of gin, dash of elderflower, stick of rosemary, and let the good times roll.

BLOW OUT CHOICE - RED

WHAT: Pinot Noir - Geantet-Pansiot - Gevrey-Chambertin 'Les Jeunes Rois' - Burgundy, France - 2014 - £68

PRODUCER: Domaine Géantet Pansiot in Burgundy is currently run by third-generation vigneron Vincent Géantet. His son Fabien has been working alongside his father since the age of twelve. Basically if you're born into a wine-making family in France you'd better enjoy making wine

WHERE: Burgundy heartlands. Everything here is done painstakingly, right down to berry-by-berry de-stemming by hand. Hardcore

WHY: Which is possibly why this is Burgundy of the oldest of schools - perfumed black fruit, rich earthy and gamey flavours, fine tannins, and good length

BLOW OUT CHOICE - WHITE

WHAT: Sauvignon Blanc - Thomas Labaille - Sancerre 'Monts Damnes' - Loire, France - 2020 - £36

PRODUCER: Jean-Paul Labaille took on the estate from his in-laws, having spent his holidays mucking in with harvest. As he works towards organic certification, he continues the traditions of hand-harvesting grapes and maintaining the purity and simplicity of Sancerre wines

WHERE: The village of Chavignol, in the Sancerre region of the Loire. You may know the excellent goat cheese that comes from here.

WHY: Made from the best vineyard in Sancerre with older vines giving greater complexity and depth. Everything to love about Sancerre and then some! A special occasion wine

BLOW OUT CHOICE - SPARKLING

WHAT: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier - 744 - Jacquesson - Champagne, France - £84

PRODUCER: Laurent Chique, who owns Jacquesson with his brother Jean Herve

WHERE: Champagne, East of Paris. Probably the most famous (and fiercely protective) sparkling wine region in the world

WHY: It's an unusual, very dry style that a lot of people are now emulating in Champagne and beyond. Very mineral and dry from the zero-dosage
